Different Types of Mental Health Professionals

Which One is Right for Me?

Mental health professionals exist to improve the mental health of individuals, couples, and families. There are several different types of licensed mental health professionals, differing in educational backgrounds, training, licensure, philosophy and technique. Some professionals may enhance relationships, some treat specific mental disorders, some specialize in prescribing medication, and some in performing psychological testing; and, often the scope of practice overlaps.

Regardless of the degree, we all do psychotherapy and you should not exclude any licensure type in your search for the right therapist. Therapists are bound by their areas of licensure and are best equipped to discuss with you, your particular issue and whether or not they are able to assist you. Most qualified mental health professionals will refer a client to another professional if the specific type of treatment needed is outside their scope of practice, and many professionals work together to provide you with the best treatment.
