Choosing a Therapist

Depressionhome-feature_r1_c1 therapy is extremely effective when there is a good match between therapist and client, so, it follows that one of the most important factors in effective therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client. Since this is a very personal choice, the best way to choose a therapist is by how you feel. Use your instincts and pay attention to your reactions to the person of the therapist - i.e., who the therapist is as a human being. You should feel relatively comfortable and safe, feel that you are being understood and challenged, and feel that you can talk to the therapist directly about your decision making, without being pressured.

Expectations of Therapy

home-feature_r1_c2Psychotherapy can be a powerful and life-changing experience. Participation in therapy can result in a number of benefits to you, including improving interpersonal relationships and resolution of the specific concerns that lead you to seek therapy. Working toward these benefits, however, requires effort on your part. Many of us enter therapy hoping to get some quick relief from the distress we are experiencing, but effective psychotherapy requires your active involvement, honesty, and openness in order to help you make the changes you desire in your life. If you work as an active participant in your own treatment, you can expect therapy will be well worth the time and money you invest.

Relationships

home-feature_r1_c3Relationships are complex. A healthy one can greatly enhance two people’s lives, while an unhealthy one can make everybody’s life pretty miserable. Couples counseling or marriage counseling (including premarital counseling) can be very helpful for couples who feel their relationship is experiencing conflict and/or distance, is being bombarded by feelings of anxiety, fear, sadness, insecurity and anger, and that communication has broken down and they don’t have the tools to fix it. Couples counseling, especially premarital counseling, can also be very helpful for couples who want to strengthen their relationship and build a stronger connection.
